Many polymeric materials are used in bio-tribological applications such as for hip/knee, dental and mandibular implants. Bio-tribological applications have the constraints that the material must be biocompatible with no adverse body reaction when implanted into the body. The materials must be stable for long-term applications in the body physiological conditions and under high load conditions such as in hip/knee implants. Finally, the material must be wear-resistant and low friction when slid against the counter surface which are generally llic or ceramics. There is another requirement which is that the wear particles must also be biocompatible and should have no adverse effect on the body. Obviously, present materials do not satisfy all the above requirements, however, there are few polymeric materials which have done well over the years in clinical applications. In this talk, the tribological performances of the traditionally used polymeric materials such as ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and new materials such as epoxy composites, PEEK (polyetherether ketone) composites, UHMWPE composites and hydrogels will be discussed and compared.

Gennady Mishuris是英国威尔士阿伯里斯特威斯大学数学系的数学建模教授。他的职位由威尔士数学与计算科学研究所于 2007年设立。Mishuris教授于1982年毕业于列宁格勒(现圣彼得堡)国立大学数学与力学系,获应用数学硕士学位(以优异成绩毕业,即 “红文凭”),三年后(1985年)在该校获得博士学位。苏联解体后,他移居波兰,并于1999年在克拉科夫理工大学力学系完成了科学博士学位(DSc)的答辩,其研究成果获波兰教育部颁发的奖项。2000年,Mishuris教授获亚历山大·冯·洪堡奖学金,赴德国纽伦堡埃尔朗根大学深造;2004年,他以勒弗休姆访问奖学金在英国伦敦南岸大学开展研究;2005至2007年间,又以玛丽·居里奖学金在利物浦大学工作。Mishuris教授已发表超过 200 篇学术论文及多部研究专著。2011年,他被授予波兰最高学术头衔—贝尔韦德雷教授(Belvedere Professorship),该头衔在博士和科学博士之后,是波兰最高学术荣誉。此外,他还持有英国皇家学会颁发的沃尔夫森研究功勋奖,并于2014年当选为威尔士学会院士(威尔士国家科学、艺术与人文科学院)。他获得了英国皇家学会(伦敦)颁发的产业研究员奖学金。
